Professors Emeriti

“Professor emeritus” is an honorary title conferred upon distinguished professors after they retire, which allows them to continue teaching and/or researching.

USP Statute
Resolution 3461, October 7, 1988
“Article 93 – The University and Units may grant the title of Professor Emeritus to their retired professors who have distinguished themselves in teaching and research activities or contributed notably to the progress of the University.”

The title of Professor Emeritus was granted to Prof. Dr. Waldyr Muniz Oliva through the initiative of the Department of Applied Mathematics, which requested the inclusion of the proposal for granting the title in the 338th Session of the MAP Council, held on June 22, 1994. After the meeting, a letter from the Congregation of IME was sent to the director, requesting the inclusion of this proposal on the agenda of the next meeting, with a justification and signed by all members. After the request and expressions of support from the departments, the 338th Extraordinary Session of the Congregation was held and the proposal was approved.

On July 1st, 1994, during the event “Dynamical Phase Transitions,” in honor of the professor, attended by numerous professors and researchers, his diploma of Professor Emeritus was presented.

Approved at the 338th (Extraordinary) Session of the Congregation on June 22, 1994 – Emeritus Professor from July 1st, 1994.

Imre Simon (2009, post mortem)

The title of Professor Emeritus was granted to Prof. Dr. Imre Simon through the initiative of Prof. Dr. Arnaldo Mandel, from the Department of Computer Science, who requested the inclusion of the proposal for granting the title at the 270th Session of the MAC Council, held on August 6, 2009, which was unanimously approved. Then, a letter was sent to the members of the IME Congregation with the same proposal and a justification, signed by the then department head, Routo Terada, and the other council members. After the request and expressions of support from various professors at the Institute, the 517th Extraordinary Session of the Congregation was held and the proposal was approved.

On October 8, 2009, the Award Ceremony for the title of Professor Emeritus was held for Prof. Imre Simon, with the presence of family members and distinguished professors, such as Prof. Waldyr Oliva, who is also an emeritus.

Approved at the 517th (Extraordinary) Session of the Congregation on October 9, 2009 – Professor Emeritus as of December 8, 2009 (Posthumously).
