Graduate Program in Probability and Statistics

The Graduate Program in Probability and Statistics of the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science of the University of São Paulo (IME-USP) consists of a master’s and doctoral programs, both created in 1970. In more than 55 years of activity, the Program has granted more than 450 master’s and 340 doctoral degrees.

The faculty is composed of specialists in several areas of Probability and Statistics, including modeling of complex and multidimensional systems, biostatistics, machine learning and statistical learning, risk analysis, survival analysis, time series, complexity and critical phenomena in neurobiology, particle systems, foundations of probabilits and statistics, asymptotic methods and regression models. Faculty members of the Program coordinate or participate in prominent international research groups, wich enables exchanges of students and researchers in Brazil and abroad.

The master’s and doctoral programs have a broad curricular structure, with courses in probability theory and statistics, as well as a set of specific courses covering areas related to the research lines developed by the faculty. About 12 courses are offered per semester, in addition to some courses offered in the IME-USP Summer Program. Students also have acess to an intense schedule of conferences and seminars organized by the research groups of the Department of Statistics.

The Program is supported by CAPES and CNPq, regularly offering scholarships to students with exclusive dedication and excellent performance. In addition, applicants may submit, together with Program advisors, projects for master’s and doctoral scholarships to FAPESP, with increases funding possibilities. The Program encourages and, when resourches are available, financially supports students’ participate in scientific events in Brazil and abroad.
