IME-USP

Ninth edition of IST-IME

An important event that promotes integration between young Brazilian and Portuguese researchers takes place in August at IME-USP in São Paulo.

From August 4 to 8, 2025, the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of São Paulo (IME-USP) will host the ninth edition of the biennial IST-IME conference, a joint initiative of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon, IME-USP and the Brazilian and Portuguese Mathematical Societies (SBM and SPM).

To foster the integration of researchers from Brazil and Portugal, the edition has a program of 20 to 30 oral communications by young Brazilian researchers and 20 lectures by Portuguese and Brazilian mathematicians.

Over the years, the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon and the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of São Paulo (IME-USP) have teamed up to hold the renowned IST-IME biennial conference. This event, which promotes the integration of young researchers from Brazil and Portugal, has alternated between Lisbon and São Paulo as venues, reflecting the commitment to academic collaboration across borders.

In this edition, the event will take place at IME-USP, located at Rua do Matão, 1010 – Butantã, São Paulo – SP.

In addition, this meeting pays tribute to the memory of two important IME professors who recently passed away: Antonio Galves (1947-2023), one of Brazil’s most essential probabilists, known for his contributions to stochastic processes and for developing the Galves-Löcherbach Model, which brought mathematics and neuroscience closer together. He coordinated CEPID NeuroMat and played a central role in training researchers, being widely recognized by the scientific community; and mathematician Sergio Muniz Oliva Filho (1965-2025), a figure with an essential role in Applied Mathematics, especially in studies of differential equations and system dynamics. In addition to his academic contributions, he played a crucial role in USP’s administration, serving as director of IME and deputy director of AUCANI (USP Agency for National and International Academic Cooperation), contributing to the internationalization of the University.
