The Bioinformatics Graduate Program at the University of São Paulo (USP) offers excellence in training of students in this exciting area of research. We have a broad definition of bioinformatics: it is the study and use of computational, statistical, and mathematical techniques applied to the understanding of all kinds of biological phenomena, and to the management of the huge amounts of information that are being generated by 21 st century technologies.
We are proud to have one of the most diverse and scientifically outstanding research faculty in bioinformatics among peer programs in Latin America. Our faculty advisors work on cutting-edge research, in areas such as genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, structural biology, systems biology. Biological application areas include neuroscience, cancer, infectious diseases, plant pathology, biochemistry, and molecular biology, among many others.
We accept and encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds, and from all countries. We offer basic courses in computer science and statistics for students whose undergrad training was in the life sciences; and we offer basic biochemistry and molecular biology courses for students whose undergrad training was in the exact sciences. In addition, every year our faculty offers a variety of advanced courses in more specialized topics.
Past graduates from our program have gone on to have successful careers in biotech companies and academia.
