The master’s and doctoral programs of the Graduate Program in Probability and Statistics are open to all applicants who hold a recognized undergraduate degree. For candidates with a good background in mathematics and statistics, direct admission to the PhD program is possible.

Selection process for admission to the master’s and doctoral programs in the Graduate Program in Probability and Statistics
Application period: from September 1 to September 30, 2025 – applications extended until October 5, 2025.

General guidelines and applicant profile
Each year, approximately 20 places are offered at each level, with applications open twice a year:
(i) during October, for admission in the first or second semester of the following year;
(ii) during April, for admission in the second semester, in case of remaining vacancies.
Master’s students must pass the course MAE5702 – Probability and Statistical Inference I. Therefore, candidates at the master’s level are expected to have a good theoretical background in probability and statistics at the undergraduate level, attested by their transcript or equivalent documents. Candidates who do not demonstrate solid knowledge in these areas must take the entrance examination and may be called for an interview.
Students in the doctoral and direct PhD programs must pass the courses MAE5811 – Advanced Probability I and MAE5834 – Advanced Statistics I. Therefore, candidates at the doctoral level are expected to have a solid theoretical background in probability and statistics at the graduate level, attested by the documents submitted with the application. Candidates who do not demonstrate solid knowledge, at the graduate level, in probability and statistics may, at the discretion of the Selection Committee and upon a statement made at the time of application, have their application considered for admission to the master’s program.
Public graduate education is an investment by society. Although students are not charged tuition, maintaining the Program involves significant costs and, in some cases, direct support through scholarships. This reinforces everyone’s responsibility for making good use of the training, meeting deadlines, and pursuing academic excellence. Applicants to the master’s and doctoral/direct PhD programs in the Program may apply for scholarships from CAPES and CNPq, upon request at the time of application. They may also apply for FAPESP scholarships through a research project prepared jointly with their future advisor.
The results of the selection processes and the classification of candidates in descending order of grades will be published on this page on the dates stated in the calls for applications. Candidates will also receive an acceptance letter by email.
After acceptance into the Program and before enrollment is finalized, the candidate may indicate a possible advisor, who must agree with this indication. If the candidate does not indicate an advisor before enrollment, one will be assigned based on the candidate’s research interests and the availability of advisors. Indicating an advisor is not required for the application.

Criteria for awarding master’s and doctoral scholarships
Master’s and doctoral scholarships offered by the Program through CAPES/CNPq will be awarded according to the order of classification established in the selection process. Initially, CNPq scholarships will be allocated to the highest-ranked candidates. Subsequently, CAPES scholarships will be used, respecting the available limit of scholarships and/or requests. Scholarships are intended for students who dedicate themselves exclusively to the Program, except in the situations listed in the CCP-MAE criteria document for accumulation of a scholarship with paid work, based on CAPES Ordinance No. 133, of July 10, 2023.
Students already enrolled in the Program without a scholarship and with good performance, as evaluated by the CCP, may request a scholarship at any time and be awarded one if scholarships are available.
