The Postgraduate Program in Statistics of the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of São Paulo (IME-USP) consists of a Master’s and a Doctorate, both created in 1970. It is part of the Programas de Excelência Acadêmica (Proex) group from the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), which makes it possible to offer a large number of scholarships and grants for participation in events and congresses. In these more than 50 years of activity, the Program has granted more than 400 Master and 300 Doctorate degrees.

The Program’s advisors comprise experts in several areas of probability and statistics, including modeling of complex and multidimensional systems, biostatistics, machine and statistical learning, risk analysis, survival analysis, time series, complexity and critical phenomena in neurobiology, particle systems, fundaments of probability and statistics, asymptotic methods and regression models. Many Program advisors coordinate or participate in international research groups, which allows for the exchange of students and researchers in Brazil and abroad.

The Master’s and Doctoral programs have a broad curricular structure with courses on probability theory and statistics, in addition to a set of specific disciplines related to the research lines developed at the Department. About 12 courses are offered per semester, in addition to some courses offered in the IME-USP Summer Program. Students also benefit from an intense program of conferences and seminars organized by the Department of Statistics research groups.

The Program has the support of CAPES and CNPq, regularly offering scholarships to students with exclusive dedication and excellent performance. In addition, future candidates can submit projects for Master’s and Doctoral scholarships with their advisors to FAPESP, increasing funding possibilities. The Program encourages and provides financial support for students to participate in scientific events in Brazil and abroad.
