É graduado em Matemática Aplicada pela Universidade de São Paulo (1975), Mestre em Matemática pela Universidade de São Paulo (1979) e Doutor em Matemática pela “Rutgers – The State University of New Jersey” (1985). Foi membro visitante do “Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey” (1992/93). Atualmente é Professor Titular da Universidade de São Paulo, no Departamento de Matemática Aplicada do Instituto de Matemática e Estatística. Tem experiência em pesquisa e na formação de recursos humanos na área de Análise Matemática, principalmente em questões relacionadas à teoria geral das equações diferenciais parciais lineares e análise complexa multidimensional.
