MAP-2121 Numerical Calculus (Engineering School)

Goals
To introduce the Numerical Calculus to the engineering school students, employing computers to solve numerical problems.

Contents
1. Floating-point arithmetic and roundoff errors.
2. Linear systems: Gaussian elimination, refinement of the solution, and inversion of matrices. Gauss-Seidel Method, Lines and Sassenfeld convergence criteria.
3. Root finding: location, Bisection and Fixed Point Iteration Methods. Error estimates.
4. Curve fitting: Least Squares Method. Orthogonal polinomials and harmonic analysis.
5. Polynomial interpolation: Lagrange and Newton interpolating polynomials. Finite differences. Error estimates.
6. Numerical quadrature: Trapezoidal and Simpson's Methods. Error estimates.
