Artificial intelligence presents many complex theoretical, societal and ethical issues that have historically been examined in works of science fiction. This talk will describe the AI & SciFi course being taught at USP this term. The class examines technical topics as well as fictional works including movies, novels and short stories. Expect to hear about the issues we have discussed, see some examples from movies and stories used in the class and learn about some of the student projects. Rebecca Bates received the B.S. degree in biomedical engineering from Boston University, the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Boston University and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Washington, although her first graduate degree was in theological studies at Harvard Divinity School. She has been a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at USP this past year and is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science department at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Her research interests include speech recognition and understanding as well as engineering education, with an emphasis on the impact of community and belonging on retention and academic success.
