SANTA FE INSTITUTE INTERNATIONAL FELLOWS PROGRAM, 2001-2003

The Santa Fe Institute announces the opening of competition for several
two-year International Fellowships, which will be awarded for the purpose
of fostering the further development of academic and interdisciplinary
research activities in targeted countries throughout the world.
Applicants are expected to have experience in, and/or a high level of
interest in, the study of complex adaptive systems.

Fellowships will be awarded to outstanding graduate students, postdoctoral
students, or senior level researchers currently affiliated, on a full-time
basis, with an academic institution within China or India, or within the
regions of Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America or the Former Soviet
Union. It is expected that award recipients will have the intention of
continuing their research and/or academic activities within their home
country after the Fellowship term expires.

An important component of the International Fellowship Program is bringing
International Fellows to SFI for two or three short-term research visits
to interact with the SFI research community. While at SFI, Fellows will
have the opportunity to participate in the Institute's many educational
programs, workshops and symposia.

Because the two-year Fellowship period will be primarily spent in the
Fellow's home country, Fellows will have the opportunity to submit
proposals for modest funding for research activities at their own
institutions. When considering support for research proposals, particular
attention will be given to the number of local constituents served by a
project and to matching support from their local institutions.

ELIGIBILITY:

* Currently affiliated, on a full-time basis, with an academic institution
in China, India, or a country within the geographic regions of Africa,
Eastern Europe, the Former Soviet Union, or Latin America; * Have an
outstanding academic record; * Demonstrated fluency in English; * Be
eligible for the proper visa for the duration of the program.

FELLOWSHIP LEVELS:

* Junior International Fellows - graduate or postdoctoral students, or
junior professors below the age of 35 or not beyond 5 years after the
Ph.D. degree. (Junior Fellows may spend up to a total of four months at
SFI (split among 2 or 3 visits) over the 2-year fellowship period.) *
Senior International Fellows - researchers and professors, age 30 and over
who are involved in research which is consistent with the mission of the
Santa Fe Institute. (Senior Fellows may spend up to nine months at SFI
(split among 2 or 3 visits) over the 2-year fellowship period.)

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Participants will be selected based on demonstrated interest in
interdisciplinary research in the physical, biological, computational, or
social sciences as they relate to complex adaptive systems. SFI is a
theoretical research institute and does not have any laboratory
facilities. For the purpose of this program we will consider theorists
over experimentalists but all are encouraged to apply. Selection will be
based on each applicant's qualifications, the strength of their research
and its relevance to the mission of the Santa Fe Institute.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

1. Cover letter including statement of research purpose and its relevance
to SFI's academic agenda, and Fellowship Level being applied for (e.g.
Junior or Senior level);

2.  Curriculum vitae (CV);

3.  A copy of an article you have published in English, if available;

4.  A copy of any English language certificate, if available;
