A most successful seminar called "Bayesianism: Foundations and Applications" was held in June of 2007. The meeting was precursory in a sense, for its focus on Foundations of Bayesian thought. Many participants have been suggesting that the meeting becomes periodic. We feel that the root planted on that occasion ought to be preserved, mostly so when the success and universalization of Bayesian Inference in all scientific fields are noticed also in Brazil.

Operational Bayesian methods have been given great importance by the Statistics community and scientists in general. Several Brazilian groups of scholars have very competently done research on the methodological aspects of Bayesian statistical inference, yielding renowned seminars and meetings. Our workshop, somewhat differently, focuses mainly on the foundations that build the Bayesian paradigm; their comparison to objectivistic or frequentist Statistics counterpart; the appropriate application of Bayesian foundations.

Interest on foundations of inductive Statistics has been growing in accordance to the increasing availability of Bayesian methodological alternatives. Scientists need to deal with the ever more difficult choice of the optimal method to be applied to their problem. The examination and discussion on foundations prevent the mere ad-hoc application of Bayesian methods by the scientific community. Our seminar will gather scholars from many different fields which use Bayesian inference.

These scholars will present their research allowing our students, who often did not have access to fine details of scientific works, to overcome their difficulty in applying the best Bayesian methodology. We will take the opportunity to honor a Brazilian statistician who pioneered and motivated many Bayesian researchers at the dawn of their careers. A founding father of UFRJ Statistics department, who strived to hire the scholars who render excellence in Bayesian research to that department. Basílio de Bragança Pereira on his 65th birthday.
