Free group algebras in division rings with valuation

November 27, 2018

14:30-15:30

132-A

Abstract:

In the mid eighties, L. Makar-Limanov  conjectured  the following:
Let $D$ be a division ring with center $Z$.  If $D$ is finitely generated  (as a division ring)  over $Z$ and $[D:Z]=\infty$, then $D$ contains a noncommutative free $Z$-algebra.

In many of the examples for which the conjecture is known to be valid, the division ring $D$ contains a (noncommutative) free group algebra over $Z$, not only a free $Z$-algebra. Note that, in general, if $X$ is the set of  free generators of a free algebra inside a division ring, $X$  may not be a set of free generators of a free group $Z$-algebra.

Given a division ring $D$ with a valuation $\upsilon$, we obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of noncommutative free group algebras in $D$. These conditions involve the graded division ring $\grad_{\upsilon}(D)$ associated to the filtration induced by the valuation.
We then use this result to obtain free group algebras in some families of division rings with involution.

These works have been submitted for publication and they can be found at arXiv:1806.10711  and arXiv:1810.12449.

November 13, 2018

14:30-15:30

132-A

Abstract:

Free groups in division rings with involution

November 06, 2018

14:30-15:30

132-A

Abstract:

Let D be a division ring with center k of characteristic different from 2, with a k-involution *. Let N be a normal subgroup of D^\bullet and assume that
N contains a torsion-free nilpotent-by-finite subgroup G which is not abelian-by-finite. When both G and N are invariant under *, we describe a way to exhibit free unitary pairs contained in N.

Additive and multiplicative partial cohomologies of groups;  globalization (part 2)

September 25, 2018

14:30-15:30

132-A

Abstract:

Using modules over partial group algebras, E. R. Alvares, M. M. S. Alves and M. J. Redondo introduced, in a paper of 2017, a cohomology theory for groups, different from the partial group cohomology considered earlier in our joint papers with M. Khrypchenko. We will discuss the similarity and the difference between the two cohomology theories. A natural situation in which both cohomologies appear is that of a unital partial action of a group on a commutative algebra A, so that the cohomology by  Alvares-Alves-Redondo  is related to  the additive structure of A, whereas, our cohomology with Khrypchenko deals with the multiplicative structure of A. We shall also discuss the globalization problem for the additive partial group cohomology, recalling earlier results for the multiplicative partial cohomology.
This is a joint work with Mykola Khrypchenko and Juan Jacobo Simon.

Constructing free subgroups in cyclic algebras

August 21, 2018

14:30-15:30

132-A

Abstract:

Let A=(K/F, \sigma, Y, b) be a cyclic algebra, with K/F a Galois extension with Galois group < \sigma> of order n and b \in F,  satisfying the relations x^n=b and
xax^{-1}=a^{\sigma} for all a \in K. Let U=U(A) be the group of units of A. We show how to construct free (non cyclic) subgroups  in  U.

A generalization of strongly monomial groups

August 10, 2018

14:30-15:30

243-A

Abstract:

Olivieri, del Rio and Simon defined strongly monomial groups and a significant result proved by them is the explicit description of the simple components of rational group algebra QG of a strongly monomial group G. In this talk, I'll define generalized strongly monomial groups, which is a generalization of strongly monomial groups. I'll show that it is a quite large class of monomial groups and contain several important well known families of groups. A description of the simple components of QG, when G is a generalized strongly monomial group will be given. If the time permits, the impact of this generalization to understand the group of central units in the integral group rings will be discussed. This is a recent joint work with my Ph.D. student Gurleen Kaur.

Algorithmic problems and right-angled Artin groups

August 7, 2018

14:30-15:30

249-A

Abstract:

In this talk we will recall (more or less) classic group-theoretic problems of algorithmic nature, and we will discuss their current state in the class of right-angled Artin groups. We also describe some joint work in the topic with D. Kahrobaei (CUNY) and T. Koberda (Virginia). The talk is intended to be understood for an audience with just a basic knowledge of Group Theory.

Corpos de frações e corpos livres (parte 3)

Abstract:

Dualidade e algebras graduadas

April 17, 2018

14:30-15:30

242-A

Abstract:

March 06, 2018

14:30-15:30

242-A
