POSTDOCTORAL and PhD FELLOWSHIPS in Sao Paulo, Brazil:
Computational Methods in Optimization
The FAPESP Thematic Project in Computational Methods in Optimization announces six (6) two-year postdoctoral fellowship positions and six (6) four-year PhD positions (“Doutorado Direto”) to work either at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, IME (https://www.ime.usp.br/en) of the University of Sao Paulo, USP (https://www5.usp.br/#english), Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil or at the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing, IMECC (https://www.ime.unicamp.br/en) of the University of Campinas, Unicamp (www.unicamp.br/index.php/english), Campinas, SP, Brazil.
Research topics include Nonlinear programming, PDE constrained optimization, Conic Optimization, DC optimization, Multiobjective and bilevel optimization, Optimization on manifolds, Scheduling, Distance Geometry, Inexact Restoration methods, Proximal Gradient methods, augmented Lagrangian methods, among others.
For the postdoctoral application, the candidate must have a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or in a related field. The candidate must have finished the PhD less than seven years before the beginning of the fellowship. The candidate should demonstrate a solid background in nonlinear optimization. Experience in programming is highly desirable for most of the topics. The candidate is expected to interact with other members of the project including masters and PhD students, and professors. The postdoctoral fellowship includes a monthly stipend of R$ 12,000.00 (about USD 2,200) and research contingency funds of 10% of the annual value of the fellowship, each year.
For the PhD application, the candidate must have a recent undergraduate degree in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or in a related field, and must not hold a Masters degree. A solid background in nonlinear optimization and experience in programming are highly desirable for most of the topics. The PhD fellowship includes a monthly stipend of R$ 5,520.00 on the first two years and R$ 6,810.00 on the third and fourth year (from about USD 1,000 to USD 1,200), and research contingency funds of 20% of the annual value of the fellowship, each year.
Both fellowships may also cover transportation costs and an additional monthly stipend as relocation allowance in the state of São Paulo. For more details, check out FAPESP’s webpage http://www.fapesp.br/en/5427 for postdoctoral scholarships and http://www.fapesp.br/5315 (in Portuguese) for PhD scholarships.
To apply, the candidate must send by email the following documents:
* Curriculum vitae with a list of publications and previous experience;
* Academic record (transcript of undergraduate and graduate grades/evaluation);
* Two recommendation letters, being one from a previous supervisor, if possible (this should be sent by the recommending person);
* A motivation letter for the application indicating the desired scholarship, desired university and possible supervisors (a list follows below).
All documents must be sent to Prof. Gabriel Haeser at ghaeser@ime.usp.br. Postdoctoral applications must be received no later than September 30, 2024 for full consideration (we expect to start the scholarships as soon as possible). PhD applications should be received no later than October 31, 2024 to start the program in February 2025, where applicants must also apply to the corresponding graduate course at IME-USP or IMECC-Unicamp.
List of possible supervisors: Roberto Andreani (Unicamp), Ernesto G. Birgin (USP), Gabriel Haeser (USP), Carlile Lavor (Unicamp), Jose Mario Martinez (Unicamp), Paulo J.S. Silva (Unicamp).
