Stadler Universität Leipzig Hora e Data: 14h00, segunda-feira, 30 de agosto de 2010 Local: auditório do NUMEC Resumo: Tiling arrays and more recently high throughput sequencing experiments have revealed a puzzling universe of short RNA species that include microRNAs but are by now means limited to this class of key regulators. These small ncRNAs appear to be a highly heterogeneous group, arising from a diverse set of precursors. The patterns govering their producting and regulation are only emerging at present. The most abundant subclass shares some microRNA-like features: they are predominantly processed from heavily structures precursors. Conversely, many of the well-known housekeeping RNAs, including snoRNAs, tRNAs, and snRNAs, are sources of abundant short RNA fragments. On the other hand, many types of short RNAs appear unrelated to structural features of their precursors. Novel and improved methods computational methods are indispensible in this field, ranging from the efficient mapping of transcriptomics data to RNA secondary structure prediction, efficient structural alignments, and machine learning.
